Backend Engineer, Ingestion

• Build and own the ingestion pipeline processing tens of billions of events per month with plans to add another zero. • Develop infrastructure to capture data, process it reliably, and provide it to other parts of the PostHog platform such as product analytics, feature flags, and CDP. • Own the entire service end to end with no committees or overzealous PMs.

• Have experience working with highly scalable, event-driven distributed systems. • Have developed multi-tenant software-as-a-service products. • Have experience with Node.js, Go, Rust, or similar languages. • Have worked with Kafka and PostgreSQL, Redis, or similar systems at scale. • Know how to ship changes quickly without breaking things. • Have carried a pager and dealt with incidents. • Be comfortable with provisioning and maintaining cloud infrastructure. • Have experience with benchmarking and profiling tools. • Have knowledge of observability systems and practices.

• Have experience with customer data platforms or similar data analytics systems. • Have experience with ClickHouse or similar OLAP databases. • Have experience with Rust for high-throughput processing. • Have experience evaluating and migrating streaming infrastructure such as WarpStream or similar Kafka alternatives.

• Own the ingestion pipeline end to end, deciding its destiny and direction. • Build open-source software processing billions of events using Node.js and Rust. • Develop infrastructure to capture data, process it reliably, and provide it to other platform services. • Isolate ingestion Kafka topics and evaluate infrastructure alternatives. • Redesign the capture contract with strict schemas and standardised response codes. • Define and commit to ingestion SLAs with automated monitoring. • Improve per-partition throughput to support 10x growth. • Build tooling to make ingestion pipelines easy to manage including Helm charts, automated metrics, and alerting.
