Staff Backend Engineer, Flourish

• Join the Flourish Platform team, responsible for the core infrastructure and features powering Canva's data visualisation platform. • Build backend services that process complex datasets and scale reliably for millions of users. • Work across UI improvements for core user flows through to infrastructure that keeps the platform reliable at scale. • Flourish operates as its own business within Canva, building innovative data visualisation tools as part of the broader mission to make data communication accessible. • Based at Canva's London campus with hybrid working.

• Strong experience building API-based backend services. • Familiarity with full-stack JavaScript development, ideally around Node.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL. • Strong experience with AWS services such as Aurora RDS, SQS, S3, and Lambda. • Strong experience supporting SaaS products end-to-end. • Experience with system observability, reliability, and CI/CD, including infrastructure as code via Terraform. • Experience hardening application security — authentication, access management, encryption, and auditing.

• Comfort reading and reviewing frontend code, even if backend is your primary focus. • Experience working in a team with mixed frontend, backend, and infrastructure skill sets. • Background in data visualisation or data-intensive platforms.

• Build technical solutions using Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Terraform, and AI, with high code review standards. • Deploy and manage services across AWS staging and production environments. • Improve reliability through testing, observability, monitoring, and deployment automation. • Collaborate with Product, Design, and Data teams to plan viable, desirable, and feasible solutions. • Drive decision-making processes that match the importance and urgency of each decision, ensuring the right people are involved. • Participate in support rotations and incident management. • Foster productive discussions with strong opinions weakly held, encouraging critical thinking and a high-feedback culture. • Evaluate and improve team processes through regular reflection and experimentation.
