Staff Software Engineer (Team Lead)

• Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team at Engine by Starling, coaching and mentoring engineers while delivering high-impact solutions for banks worldwide. • Own and lead multiple complex projects from inception through to production, getting hands-on when needed to unblock architectural challenges. • Shape the future capabilities of Engine — including approach, tooling, automation, and architecture — in collaboration with clients, solution architects, and product owners. • Champion a healthy engineering culture built on continuous improvement, technical excellence, and a relentless focus on the customer. • Hybrid role based in London, Manchester, Cardiff, or Southampton.

• Proven experience leading and mentoring high-performing engineering teams. • Track record of delivering change to critical systems in a distributed environment. • Highly proficient developer who maintains a high standard for technical and coding excellence through their own work. • Good understanding of DevOps practices. • Experience delivering complex outcomes across multiple domains and teams. • Comfortable working cross-functionally with technologists from other specialties and non-technical stakeholders. • Experience coaching and mentoring team members to upskill and develop them in their careers. • Track record of leading the technical delivery of large-scale projects to successful completion.

• Strong Java background, given it makes up the majority of Engine's backend codebase. • Familiarity with Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, or Grafana in a cloud-native environment. • Experience working in a SaaS organisation delivering technology to external clients or partners.
