Senior Java Software Engineer, Payment Schemes

• Work on some of Starling's most mission-critical services as part of the Payment Schemes team, owning integrations with Faster Payments, BACS, and SWIFT connectivity. • Build and maintain systems responsible for Starling's payment integrations, ensuring correctness, stability, and accurate handling of instant, scheduled, and cross-border payments. • Deliver clean, maintainable Java code in a cloud-native, distributed services architecture releasing to production 15–20 times per day. • Operate with real ownership in a flat structure, taking ideas from design through to continuous deployment. • Hybrid role based in London.

• At least 5 years of commercial Java experience. • Strong understanding of delivering robust, scalable systems with a proven track record of engineering excellence. • Excellent attention to detail and ability to write clear, concise, and maintainable code. • Comfortable working in a cloud-native environment — Starling uses AWS and GCP. • Commitment to clean coding, simple solutions, automated testing, and continuous deployment.

• Experience with AWS and PostgreSQL. • Familiarity with Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, or Grafana. • Prior experience integrating with UK or international payment schemes such as Faster Payments, BACS, or SWIFT.

• Build and maintain the systems responsible for Starling's payment integrations across Faster Payments, BACS, and SWIFT connectivity. • Ensure system stability and accuracy across instant, scheduled, and cross-border payment flows. • Deliver new features, improved reliability, and mandated changes to payment scheme integrations. • Write clean, well-tested Java code and contribute to a high-frequency continuous deployment pipeline. • Collaborate across teams and share knowledge in an open, supportive engineering culture.
