About the role

💼 What you will do

• Build and maintain the core infrastructure and application platform that underpins all of Monzo's technology teams. • Work hands-on with Kubernetes clusters, AWS and GCP infrastructure, and configuration management using Terraform. • Design and implement backend services including APIs and controllers that provide a simplified, self-service experience for other engineers. • Integrate and manage open-source components to provide robust, scalable primitives for engineering teams. • Develop software for complex projects such as infrastructure migrations, high-scale traffic management, and security tooling. • Help platform teams abstract away infrastructure complexity so they can focus on solving real customer problems. • Contribute to scaling Monzo's infrastructure foundations from 10 to 20 million customers and beyond.

📋 Job Requirements

• Have significant professional experience in software engineering, including writing, testing, and deploying robust backend services using strongly typed languages. • Have hands-on experience with AWS and/or GCP and be proficient with Kubernetes. • Be naturally inclined to solve problems through automation and have experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform. • Be deeply curious about systems, enjoy investigating complex issues, and understand how modern distributed applications fail and scale. • Be excited to build a platform that enables success for everyone at Monzo, with a focus on reliability, performance, and developer experience. • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced team that deals with ambiguity and evolving requirements.

🌟 Nice-to-have

• Have experience writing Go for backend services or platform tooling. • Have experience managing Envoy Proxy or similar service mesh technologies. • Have experience working across both AWS and GCP in a production environment. • Have experience working on large-scale infrastructure migrations or high-traffic systems.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Enhance and maintain foundational platform tools and systems across Kubernetes, AWS, and GCP. • Build backend services that abstract infrastructure complexity and enable self-service for other engineers. • Manage cloud resources using Terraform and integrate open-source components into the platform. • Investigate and resolve complex infrastructure issues across Monzo's distributed systems. • Develop software for infrastructure migrations, traffic management, and security tooling. • Support other platform teams in successfully adopting and using cloud infrastructure. • Contribute to the reliability, performance, and developer experience of Monzo's engineering platform.
