Senior / Staff Backend Engineer (API) – Economy

• Play a foundational role in architecting and evolving the systems that power how creators earn and how users transact across VRChat globally, including subscriptions, digital ownership, creator monetisation, payment processing, and economic analytics. • Design and implement scalable backend services in Node.js and TypeScript, ensuring transactional integrity and compliance in high-volume economic systems where correctness, auditability, reliability, and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable. • Own the full lifecycle of services from development through deployment and monitoring, improving CI/CD reliability, observability, and incident response practices. • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, Finance, Trust and Safety, Infrastructure, and peer engineering teams to shape the long-term technical direction of the economy stack. • Work fully remotely from anywhere in the world with flexible hours and core collaboration overlap.

• Bring 5+ years of experience in backend engineering for SaaS, fintech, marketplaces, or online platforms. • Bring deep proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, with strong experience across relational and non-relational databases including MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis. • Bring proven experience building and maintaining external integrations with payment vendors and fintech platforms. • Bring experience operating under PCI DSS, GDPR, and PII requirements, and building subscription engines, marketplaces, accounting systems, or invoicing workflows. • Bring familiarity with AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code.

• Bring experience with event-driven or high-throughput transactional systems. • Bring experience integrating with Steam, Oculus, Apple, or Google Play payment systems. • Bring experience leading large-scale refactors or architectural migrations. • Bring experience building internal operational tooling or creator-facing systems. • Bring active participation in creator economies or VRChat itself.

• Design and implement scalable backend services in Node.js and TypeScript, modelling digital ownership, entitlements, wallets, and payouts. • Ensure transactional integrity, traceability, and reconciliation accuracy across payment transactions and reporting systems. • Build and evolve systems supporting VRC+ subscriptions, central and avatar marketplaces, digital credits, creator payouts, and economic analytics. • Lead architectural initiatives across the economy stack, identifying systemic risks and driving preventative improvements. • Mentor engineers, elevate engineering standards, and influence cross-team design decisions — with Staff-level candidates expected to architect cross-team economic platform primitives and define long-term technical strategy.
