Platform Engineer, Database Platform

Posted on 19 Jun 2026

About the role

💼 What you will do

• Build and operate a global "Databases as a Service" platform managing a critical estate of around 1,000 database instances across multiple environments. • Design, build, and evolve Wise's internal cloud-based database platform used by hundreds of engineers globally. • Contribute to the validation, automation, and rollout of YugabyteDB-based platform components from proof of concept through to production. • Work closely with Platform and Data teams to ensure best practices, guardrails, and the right abstractions are in place. • Hybrid role based in London.

📋 Job Requirements

• 2+ years of Platform Engineering experience (not software-only). • Experience with cloud infrastructure on AWS or GCP. • Python development skills or similar. • Solid understanding of software engineering principles — writing secure, testable, and maintainable code. • Proficiency with Cloud APIs and DevOps tooling such as Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, and Teleport. • Clear communicator who collaborates well across teams.

🌟 Nice-to-have

• Practical experience with distributed databases at scale — YugabyteDB preferred, or CockroachDB, TiDB, or Cloud Spanner. • Experience with or strong interest in migration patterns (CDC/logical replication, verification, and rollback) and automation for provisioning, backups, and upgrades. • Experience building Database-as-a-Service platforms or internal developer tooling. • Some front-end development experience.

🎯 Responsibilities

• Design, build, and evolve Wise's internal cloud-based database platform. • Contribute to the design, validation, and rollout of YugabyteDB-based platform components from PoC through pilot to production. • Implement automation for provisioning, upgrades, backups, and routine operations for Yugabyte clusters. • Embed security and compliance controls — encryption, auth, RBAC, and network controls — into Yugabyte platform components. • Collaborate with product teams, SREs, and DBAs to apply platform guardrails for services adopting Yugabyte.
